China reports a rise in domestic travel

China is celebrating a 14.8% increase in domestic tourism in 2024, which is higher than the numbers from the previous year

According to data released today, Chinese travel increased significantly in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching 2018 levels. Gains, nevertheless, pale in comparison to the predictions made a few months ago by several influential experts.

The authorities had to make do with 5.615 billion domestic tourists, falling short of the record six billion that were reached in 2019, the year prior to the pandemic.

A survey released in October by Oxford Economics and the World Travel and Tourism Council projected that domestic travel in China will end 2024 with record earnings of 6,790 billion yuan, or roughly US$ 938 billion. This estimate has since been lowered to 5,750 billion yuan, or US$ 790 billion.

China uncertainties that continue to hover over the country’s economy

As could be predicted, the majority of people who visit the country for leisure are city dwellers. They traveled 4.37 billion miles in 2024, up 16.3% from 2023, while rural dwellers traveled 1.245 billion miles, up 9.9%.

Better transportation infrastructure has made it possible for individuals to travel outside well-known locations like Beijing, Shanghai, or Xi’an; more and more, tourists seeking unique experiences can now visit previously undiscovered locations.

Since Chinese authorities are actively promoting Xinjiang, the homeland of Muslim Uyghurs, as a tourist destination as part of their sinicization agenda, it merits special attention.

In 2024, Xinjiang had a record 300 million visitors thanks to its many stunning locations and cultural treasures,

Including the Tianshan Mountains, Sayram Lake, Jiaohe ruins, and the ancient city of Kashgar.

Statistics on foreign travel to China for 2024 was recently disclosed by the country’s National Immigration Administration.

It reveals that over 20 million foreign travelers visited China without a visa, more than double the number of visits.

This is partially due to Beijing’s primary strategy to increase international travel,

The visa-free transit policy for short visits, which has been expanded to 54 countries and was severely penalized.
