The Maduro administration in Caracas Venezuela claimed that the US was involved in an oil grab.

Reuters, Washington, January 3 reports
Following months of pressure over allegations of drug-running and illegitimacy in power, President Donald Trump said early on Saturday that the United States had struck Venezuela overnight and arrested its long-serving President Nicolas Maduro.
Since the invasion of Panama in 1989 to remove military commander Manuel Noriega due to similar accusations, Washington has not intervened so directly in Latin America.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Last year, Maduro was accused by the United States of operating a “narco-state” and manipulating the election, which the opposition said was won by a landslide.
The leader of Venezuela, who came to office in 2013 after Hugo Chavez, has stated that Washington aims to seize control of the world’s largest oil reserves.
Elite special forces troops
A U.S. official informed Reuters that Maduro was taken prisoner by elite special forces troops.
Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino remained adamant, although the Venezuelan government would not immediately confirm Maduro’s capture or departure.
“Free, independent, and sovereign Venezuela rejects with all the strength of its libertarian history the presence of these foreign troops, which have only left behind death, pain, and destruction,” Padrino stated in a video transmission on state television shortly after Trump’s statement.
We clench our fists today to protect what is rightfully ours. Let’s band together because it will give us the power to fight and win.”
Direct U.S. involvement brings back traumatic memories of previous interventions and is generally strongly opposed by governments and populace in the region, despite the fact that several Latin American states reject Maduro and claim he stole the 2024 election.
