Government and private sector leaders have called on the media to play a key role in promoting Uganda’s tourism sector ahead of the 6th Bi-Annual Private Sector CEO Retreat, set to take place in Fort Portal from September 9th to 11th, 2025.
Speaking at the media start held in Kampala on August 19th, the Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Martin Mugarra, stress the need for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to position Uganda as a top tourism station.
“This retreat is a sign of national vocation where the private sector takes an active role in supporting tourism growth,” he said, quoting President Museveni’s words that “tourism is not only about wildlife and scenery, but also about people and peace.”
Mrs. Irene Mugisha, CEO of the Uganda CEO Forum, said this year’s retreat will focus on the theme “Making Uganda a Preferred Tourism Station.” The event aims to strengthen partnerships, promote Uganda’s unique attractions, and allow leadership efforts in the sector. She respect the Ministry’s support, stating, “Without its backing, we would be pushing something we are not fully at home with.”
Uganda Tourism Board CEO, Ms. Julz Kagwa, noted that there is now better working together between the public and private sectors. She mentioned that Uganda currently receives around 1.3 million visitors each year, but the target is to double this number. She also point up the importance of regional partnerships, such as the upcoming Uganda-Kenya Coast Conference, which is part of the broader tourism approach.
“Our strategy is not limited to government. It is now being reshaped to work closely with the private sector, so both move forward together. A big part of this strategy is product development. It’s not enough to promote Uganda, we must also be ready to host more visitors,” she explained.
Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Tom Butime, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustainable tourism and highlighted the media’s critical role in telling Uganda’s story to the world.
“This retreat will help us share the message that Uganda is ready, competitive, and welcoming to international visitors,” he said.
He encouraged journalists to use National Tourism Month in September to showcase Uganda’s attractions both locally and globally.
The retreat is organized by the Presidential CEO Forum in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism. It will bring together senior government officials, private sector leaders, and development partners to discuss strategies for tourism growth, innovation, and inclusive economic development.
