Morocco to Host Africa’s First UN Tourism Thematic Office to promote investment and innovation in the continent’s tourist industry

This initiative,

which was launched by UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili and Morocco’s Minister of tourist, Handicrafts

and Social and Solidarity Economy Fatim-Zahra Ammor, aims to promote investment and innovation in the continent’s tourist industry.

In order to drive transformative actions in African tourism, the theme office will host conferences, seminars, capacity-building initiatives, and innovation-focused forums. Additionally, it will hold start-up contests to promote business endeavors in the travel industry around the continent.

At the signing ceremony, Ammor emphasized that Morocco’s selection to host Africa’s first UN tourism thematic office reflects the Kingdom’s continental leadership in tourism development and that the office is in line with HM King Mohammed

VI’s Royal Vision to promote cooperative African action and further the UNWTO’s 2030 agenda for the African continent.

Pololikashvili, for his part, commended

Morocco’s dedication to setting up the office and called it a crucial step in bolstering the socioeconomic growth of African travel destinations.

“This office will support UNWTO’s efforts for the benefit of Africa’s tourism industry while ensuring decentralized

efficient communication and coordination with partners,” he stated.

The opening of this office marks a significant turning point in Morocco’s strategic engagement with the UNWTO

opening up new avenues for African states to work together and establishing tourism as a vital component of the continent’s sustainable development.

An deal announced Tuesday in Marrakech will establish the first United Nations thematic office for tourism

in Africa in Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
