Thaufeeq adds, “We are acutely aware of the crisis and its daily impacts as the lowest-lying country in the world.”

“Protecting our pristine environment is linked to our livelihood which is heavily dependent on a thriving tourism industry.”

“Kept secret” for many years

The Maldives is a remote archipelago of 1,192 islands in the Indian Ocean.

According to Thaufeeq, it was a “kept secret amongst the most adventurous travellers” until the 1970s.

A constant stream of new resorts is being built to handle the increasing number of guests.

175 resorts are currently operational, according to a Ministry of Tourism study.

The Maldives’ reputation as a popular travel destination is largely by the government.

“Sustainability has always been at the core of the Maldives tourism industry,”

Thaufeeq states, pointing out that almost all lodging establishments use some form of sustainable approach.
