UN tourism strengthens sustainable tourism links with Austria to enhance sustainable tourism in the country
In high-level meetings,
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili reaffirmed Austria’s crucial role in promoting sustainable tourism
citing the country’s six villages as part of the UN Tourism Best Tourism Village Program and the Tyrol region as one of the newest INSTO
(International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories).
Austria’s crucial leadership as Co-Chair of the Committee on Statistics was emphasized during a meeting with Susanne Kraus-Winkler,
State Secretary for Tourism (Federal Ministry of Labour and Economy), last month.
Implementing the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST), which was approved by the UN Statistical Commission last year, was the main goal. The leadership of Austria has been crucial in creating this globally accepted framework, which offers crucial definitions, concepts, and structures to quantify the economic, social, and environmental effects and dependencies of tourism.

“A top tourist destination like Austria can play a significant role in advancing global tourism issues, such as the SF-MST, while at the same time to ensure that tourism remains a key driver of sustainable and inclusive development through such measurement instruments,” stated Secretary-General Pololikashvili. UN Tourism praises Austria’s unwavering dedication to fostering a resilient and sustainable tourism industry, as well as its leadership in this area on a regional and international scale, as evidenced by its relatively high number of Best Tourism Villages and its status as a top destination and INSTO Network member.
While speaking with Austria ‘s potential to share its wealth of knowledge and technical capacity to drive sustainable tourism initiatives worldwide
was highlighted by both parties during discussions with Ambassador Harald Stranzl, Director for Foreign Economic Relations
(Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs), on how to leverage Austrian expertise to advance development cooperation in tourism.
According to the most recent data from UN Tourism, Austria ranks 10th globally in international tourist arrivals,
welcoming 30.9 million international arrivals in 2023, and 19th in international tourism receipts
with the sector generating 22.8 billion EUR last year, an 11% increase over 2019.
