BA 2237 turned round after nearly five hours to Costa Rica
BA 2237 turned round after nearly five hours to Costa Rica following an issue with a Boeing 777 over the Atlantic spending 9 hours to no where
Tourists experienced a nine-hour flight to nowhere when a British Airways aircraft turned around midway across the Atlantic Ocean.
On Tuesday morning, the Boeing 777 departed London for San Jos, Costa Rica.
According to Flightradar24 data, the flight was delayed by approximately half an hour.
The Boeing 777 abruptly turned around over the Atlantic and returned to Europe about five hours into the flight.
Approximately nine hours after takeoff, the aircraft returned to London Gatwick. It usually takes ten hours to fly to Costa Rica.
The plane travelled about 4,000 kilometres in total.
Remarks from BA Airlines
“After their aircraft encountered a minor technical issue, we apologise for the delay in our customers’ Tour plans,” a British Airways representative told Business Insider.
“Our teams looked after our customers during the delay and worked hard to get them on their way as quickly as possible.”
Passengers on BA have experienced flights to nowhere on multiple occasions in recent months.
When a technical issue was discovered in June, a Boeing 787 that had flown 2,300 miles to Newfoundland, Canada, turned around.
Diversions can be expensive for airlines and inconvenient for travellers including Tourists.
When a technical problem occurs, British Airways flights frequently return to a London airport hub because it is less expensive and easier to schedule replacement flights and fix the aircraft.
According to Flightradar24, the Boeing 777 that made the U-turn on Tuesday was back in the air the next day.
A flight to nowhere is perhaps better for European carriers than the May incident with an Air France plane.
A different flight had to be cancelled in order to rescue the passengers after an emergency landing in Canada’s far north was prompted by a burning stench in the cabin.
