Santa Barbara Airport closes indefinitely as runways flood

Santa Barbara Airport closes indefinitely as runways flood with more rain fall on the Central Coast without a scheduled date of reopening.

California floods 2024The closure started just before five in the morning on Monday and Airport authorities say,

“We are pausing Commercial flights and general aviation operations as well as closing Terminal.”

“For information about specific flights, please contact your airline directly.”

The airstrip has a large amount of standing water and until Wednesday morning, Santa Barbara County is under a flood watch.

There might be “multiple rounds of moderate to heavy showers,” according to the National Weather Service.

This may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

” Between Monday and Wednesday, there’s a chance of two to five inches of rain, with up to 10 inches in the highlands.”

On Monday, dozens of flights were cancelled disrupting Tourism.

The main traffic patterns at this small regional airport include Flights to and from neighbouring California cities.

Others come from other Western locations like Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Note that Santa Barbara Airport is closing for the second time in weeks.

The first time closure is when it was amid severe storms two weeks ago.

The Santa Barbara airport closure is due to flooding of up to 10 inches-25 centimetres of rain.

In a statement on social media, airport officials say,

“General aviation operations are on hold, commercial flights have been cancelled and the Terminal is closed.”

“For specific flight information, please get in touch with your airline directly.”

As the storm moves towards greater Los Angeles, the National Weather Service warns that California’s central coast is at risk of “significant flooding.

” Up to 5 inches (12 cm) of rain will fall in many areas.

Note that isolated totals of 10 inches (25 cm) of rain is possible in the Santa Lucia as well as in Santa Ynez mountain ranges.

The destructive atmospheric river that parked itself over Southern California earlier this month, turning highways into rivers and causing hundreds of landslides there by killing at least nine people.

It is predicted to pass through more quickly than this storm however.
