Due to cracks found in the runway, the airport will close till Monday evening at the latest.

HTA says in a statement that they are collaborating with each island’s visitor bureau.

They claim to be in contact with the local hotels, KOA-serving airlines, and the state department of transportation.

Also the tourism body stays “Our partners at the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii on each island are standing by to assist further if need arises.

“We are examining our options for providing additional assistance to passengers in Kona who are unable to depart this evening. Passengers who are in the air but have been diverted to another airport will also be assisted.

When information becomes available, the HTA intends to disseminate it.

So Tourists can get in touch with their airline to inquire about particular flights.

However, there is lengthy list of delays and detours due to the airport closure.

Hawaiian Airlines remarks

Hawaiian Airlines says that all flights into and out of Kona are discontinuing till Monday night.

One trans-Pacific flight and at least five inter-island Hawaiian Air flights have been affected.

Passenger Anna Cau says, “They informed us it was going to be a one-hour delay five minutes before we were about to take off.” “They’ve finally made the decision to close the airport public. At the airport, there are hundreds of people.

While many people here lack housing and a means of transportation to Hilo, we are lucky to have friends with whom we will be living.

But Kay Smullen, a passenger, responded to the shutdown in a more relaxed manner.

“It is what it is, really.” We’re not really able to regulate this,” she remarks.

In an effort to reopen the runway as soon as possible, the Hawaii Department of Transportation say that it is collaborating with contractors.

A 10-by-10-foot section of the runway is being resurfaced by contractors.
