South African Airways gets approval of large fleet expansion to enable the national airline to resume international routes to boost Tourism
The expansion of fleet will enhance seat capacity for its regional and domestic destinations
The airline’s plan to lease six new aircraft has received approval from both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Public Enterprises, according to interim CEO Professor John Lamola.
“The aircraft will be delivered before the end of this calendar year, and the planes include a wide-body aircraft as well as five narrow-body aircraft — all of them Airbus equipment,” Lamola added.
“As SAA, we are thrilled to set the stage for the restart of our first international route following our exit from business rescue and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the upcoming weeks, we will announce the new route and begin commercial marketing and sales for it.
According to Lamola, the ‘new’ SAA has been competitive, open to the public, and cost-effective ever since it emerged from Business Rescue in September 2021. The terms and conditions of the deals for the new aircraft are in line with the same principles.
“A Request for Proposals for four A320 narrow-body aircraft is currently available. The lessor community has already agreed to provide the other two, an A330 and an A320, on the same terms as those already issued in the RFP.
“All four of the aeroplanes we’re ordering will be operational by September 2023. This strengthens the local and regional economies significantly and demonstrates our dedication to growing our route system and frequency in the African market. Additionally, it will make sure that the supply of seats and traffic flow are balanced for the benefit of our passengers, Lamola continued.
